Red Nose Day falls on 27 August this year. It is Red Nose Australia's national day to raise awareness and funds for safe sleep research and for families affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child.

The six safe sleep recommendations

Red Nose Australia's safe sleep recommendations apply to every baby from birth to 12 months.

  • Sleep baby on their back for every sleep, day and night.

  • Keep baby's head and face uncovered during sleep.

  • Keep baby smoke free before birth and after.

  • Use a safe sleeping environment: a firm flat mattress in a cot or bassinet that meets Australian safety standards.

  • Share a room with baby for at least the first six months and ideally the first 12 months, in their own cot or bassinet rather than an adult bed.

  • Breastfeed baby if possible.
